Advisory Council Protecting Vital Resources in Turbulent Economy

It took nearly ten years to build the Karl E. Neupert Endowment Fund designed to provide decades of resources for educational programs for the PHCP and PVF industry. It took only five months in the worst economy in nearly 70 years to wipe out over half of the value. However, thanks to the dedicated oversight of the little-known Education Foundation Endowment Fund Investment Committee established to oversee the endowment’s vital investments, the fund has weathered the near collapse of the markets. Wall Street Surges After Upbeat Economic Reports

Wall Street began a new month with a surge in morning trading on upbeat economic reports from Australia, China and, somewhat surprisingly, the United States. The crucial report for American traders came from a unexpected jump in a manufacturing index. The Institute for Supply Management said that its manufacturing index unexpectedly rose to 56.3 in August from 55.5 in July. A reading above 50 indicates growth. The manufacturing sector has expanded for 13 consecutive months.More

The ASA Education Foundation has scheduled three Essentials of Profitable Warehouse Operations© workshops to its Fall line-up of educational programs. In collaboration with ASA regional affiliate Southern Wholesalers Association (SWA), these full-day workshops will be offered in Raleigh, N.C. on Nov. 11, Atlanta, Ga. on Dec. 9 and Nashville, Tenn. on Dec. 12. The workshops summarize the content of the Essentials of Profitable Warehouse Operations© certificate course. In addition to the full day's instruction, participants in the course also receive their own copy of the course book and the right to take the final exam and earn a Certificate of Completion.More

Copper Rises to Four-Month High on China, US Manufacturing

Copper rose to the highest price in four months as manufacturing grew at a faster pace last month in China and the U.S., the world's largest metal users. The Chinese purchasing managers’ index rose more-than- forecast to 51.7 in August from 51.2 in July, a government- backed report showed. The Institute for Supply Management's gauge of U.S. manufacturing unexpectedly rose to 56.3 from 55.5. Readings greater than 50 signal growth. Copper prices gained 1.8 percent in August.More

When Pirates Threaten Your Supply Chain

Early in the morning of August 2, the MV Suez, a Panamanian-flag vessel with a crew of 24, was boarded by pirates off the coast of Somalia. Using only a motorized skiff and small arms, the attackers took over the ship in five minutes. One week later, a helicopter from the Navy frigate USS Kauffman was just able to prevent a similar attack on the MV Ice Explorer in the Gulf of Aden. They were only the latest in a rash of incidents to have plagued commercial shipping over the past two years.More
