Harvey's Wrath Will be Felt All Over
ASA Materials Market Digest©
Portions of the Texas Coast as well as western Louisiana remain in dire conditions in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. The storm completely and utterly inundated the region, and the long-term consequences are only now starting to be realized as companies continue to check in on staff, assess damage and prepare for recovery. On August 29th, The Wall Street Journal had reported up to 10.0 percent of the nation’s trucking capacity had been impacted, and overland shipping costs are expected to rise by more than 20.0 percent in some cases. On September 6th, Port Houston reported its facilities were fully operational and working normal business hours having closed nearly two weeks earlier. Portable Showers Needed for Hurricane Harvey Relief
American Supply Association
Two churches in the League City area have provided volunteer work crews to help people "mud out" their homes south of Houston between League City and Galveston. Glenn Fuller, Texas Plumbing Supply, and his family have personally helped on these work crews. So far, these two churches' work crews have completed 1,500 homes in the last two weeks. As of Tues., Sept. 12, there are still 1,000 homes that have signed up, requesting "mud out" assistance, and more to be expected. In addition to local volunteers, there is a team of volunteers from out of town being housed at a location that has only two showers, which makes for a long night before everyone is able to have a shower. They are in need of a good source for portable showers. According to the leaders of the work crews, the few they found online are asking a premium, if they have any availability at all. Please contact Glenn Fuller if you have any recommendations or can provide any assistance with Portable Showers.More

Employee Compensation in the Event of Inclement Weather & Disasters
SESCO Management Consultants
Poor weather conditions and natural disasters, such as hurricanes, can often raise pay-related questions for employers. The issue is straightforward for non-exempt employees (i.e. employees subject to overtime pay). Non-exempt employees are paid for the actual time worked. Thus, if they do not report for work or the employer is closed, they are not paid for the day. An employer may choose to allow these employees to use vacation or other paid time off to cover the lost wages. More
