Distributors Sound off on Pending Overtime Regulations, Share Best-Practices
American Supply Association
With the changes coming December 1, millions of employees and the small businesses they work for will feel the impact. In a recent survey of ASA’s members, companies of every size shared their worries, their plans, and their resources for how they’ll manage this change. While the official date for the regulation is December 1, it’s worth noting that the paycheck delivered on or near December 1 should reflect these changes, which means decisions, discussions and implementation should be well underway by the middle of November. Seek help, carefully study the regulation and talk to experts to get the answers you need. That was a prevailing message by participants, but not by an overwhelming majority. More

Recession Drivers Coming to a Head in 2019?
ASA Advisor©
According to Lauren Stockli, an economic analyst with ITR Economics, there are three main recession drivers likely coming to a head in 2019: higher taxes, higher interest rates and inflation/high input costs, particularly energy. Regardless of one’s political affiliation and who wins the upcoming election, taxes are expected to increase. The extent is not clear, but our obligations to social security, welfare and our national debt indicate this is a likely scenario. Interest rates, which have been kept low by the Fed, are also thought to rise significantly enough by 2019 to hinder the capital investment and consumer spending we see now. While it is good sign to see rising employment and wages, as it is supporting growth in retail spending, there seems to be a weak pricing position for businesses moving into 2019. Wages are increasing, health care costs are rising and skilled labor is becoming harder to find, which means hiring and retaining employees will be more expensive. In turn, producers will compensate for rising labor costs by passing cost increases onto consumers. All these factors will put downward pressure on consumer spending, which through the last cycle as measured by GDP, has lifted the overall U.S. economy out of recession.
