ASA Leads Effort in Recent Supreme Court Filing
American Supply Association
The American Supply Association (ASA) led several industry groups recently in filing an amicus curiae brief to the Supreme Court of the United States. Joined by the American Lighting Association, the American Veterinary Association and other national associations, the brief was in support of a South Dakota case making its way to the high court. An amicus curiae brief is written to bring to the Court’s attention relevant matters not already brought to its attention by the parties in the case. ASA was asked to file a brief dealing with the burden placed on plumbing wholesalers known as showrooming. The ongoing trend of customers receiving the benefit of our members’ talented workforce, measuring and learning about products, only to make the purchase over the Internet. More

ASA Welcomes Incoming President Brian Tuohey of The Collins Companies
American Supply Association
The path in which incoming American Supply Association President Brian Tuohey took to business ownership has a great story behind it. “It’s a crazy story,” Tuohey, president of East Windsor, Conn.-based industrial PVF distributor The Collins Companies, warns. Tuohey, you see, always desired to own his own business. “Of course I had no money and no idea how I was ever going to do it,” he says. And then he received a phone call one day that would change his life. He prefaces the story with this: “I have 16 years of Catholic and Jesuit education and a very strong belief in God."More

China on Scrap: Ecological Motive or Negotiating Tactic
ASA Materials Market Digest©
The biggest story in the scrap world is China’s plan to limit the entry of what it calls “foreign waste.” U.S. scrap exports more than $2.2 billion worth of scrap to China, mostly wastepaper and plastics. China’s official party line is that it wants to eliminate contaminated scrap to build a more “ecological civilization,” which includes promoting more domestic recycling. A more cynical, but perhaps accurate, interpretation is that China is using the scrap issue as a trade negotiating tactic. How Salespeople Can Compete With Amazon
Industrial Distribution
In a recent seminar, a salesperson asked, “Is Amazon going to replace salespeople?” Amazon is a formidable competitor. They disrupt every market they touch. Amazon successfully enters different markets because they are customer-centric. They focus on the customer’s needs, not the competition. Jeff Bezos, the Amazon founder, famously said, “We’re not competitor obsessed, we’re customer obsessed. We start with what the customer needs and we work backwards.” Salespeople are competing with one of the most customer-centric organizations that has ever existed. Amazon has made it ridiculously easy to buy. They offer one-click ordering, cheap prices, and free next-day delivery. Amazon makes it easy to buy online. More
