WaterWorld    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The shift in power in the House of Representatives has changed the prospects for water-related legislation in the 112th Congress, which will sit in January and start work in February. Republicans seized control of the House in the November elections, increasing their numbers from 178 to 242. Democrats slipped from 255 to 192. The November elections left the Democrats in control of the Senate with a slim majority. The Senate previously had 57 Democrats, 41 Republicans and 2 Independents (who caucus with the Democrats). The November elections changed the balance to 51 Democrats, 47 Republicans and 2 Independents. More

Andy Jorgensen, D-Fort Atkinson, said the first part of the two-piece Marketing Manufacturers and Keeping Employees legislation would provide for a five-year, $2.6 million marketing campaign for Wisconsin manufacturers. The idea, according to state Assembly Minority Leader Rep. Peter Barca, D-Kenosha, is to market Wisconsin manufacturers on a national and international level the way the state markets Wisconsin tourism. More

Toward a 21st-Century Regulatory System
American Supply Association/The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In another shift toward the political center following losses in November, President Barack Obama has signed an executive order aimed to reduce and reform our burdensome regulatory system. Written in the opinion pages of the influential Wall Street Journal, the president articulated his goals to encourage the business community to invest with greater confidence, reduce unemployment and ultimately increase America's competitiveness. In his words, Obama hopes to "strike the right balance" between protecting the public and not interfering with economic growth. While it remains unknown exactly which regulations will be candidates for revision or elimination, ASA members should help the administration identify onerous regulations by exploring, where your feedback and participation is encouraged and essential.
