Industry Leaders Continue to Drive Success, Growth

At ASA's annual winter meeting last week, 70 volunteer leaders representing ASA's various committees, executive councils and ASA's divisions were on hand to discuss strategic goals and objectives for the upcoming year. Strategic planning facilitation was led by 2014 ASA President John Strong. "This was a successful kickoff to the year for ASA," ASA Executive Vice President Mike Adelizzi said. "Not only did the group finalize our overall plans for 2014, but we also facilitated strategic planning sessions for our IPD, Plumbing and Young Executives divisions."

Weak December Jobs Numbers For Manufacturing

Nearly one year into President Barack Obama's second term, his stated goal of creating one million new manufacturing jobs by 2017 has become more elusive than ever. With fresh numbers for December factored in, the data shows that the U.S. added only 77,000 new manufacturing jobs in 2013. The jobs report showed an upward revision of manufacturing jobs in November: 31,000 were added that month. But December's total was a major miss: only 9,000 jobs were added, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Construction Industry Outlook Upbeat in Latest AGC Forecast

Many construction firms plan to start hiring again and most contractors predict demand will either grow or remain stable in virtually every market segment this year, according to survey results released by the Associated General Contractors of America. The survey, conducted as part of Optimism Returns: The 2014 Construction Industry Hiring and Business Outlook, provides a generally upbeat outlook for the year even as firms worry about growing worker shortages, rising costs and the impact of new regulations and federal budget cutting.

Drafting a Written Collections Policy is Good for Business

While sometimes overlooked — or just noticed but ignored — a strong collection policy is an important piece of a complete and thorough credit policy. A well-conceived collection policy, coupled with a detailed lien policy, will save a business much of the time and expense taken up by the litigation that sometimes seems necessary to get paid. Some collectors and collection agencies have rightfully gained a less-than-stellar reputation, and it's understandable if companies want to keep the collections process in-house. Either way, a good in-house or outsourced collection program can benefit your bottom line.
