House Tax Writers Mark-Up Bill to Address '30-Hour Work Week'
American Supply Association
This week, the House Ways and Means Committee advanced along party lines legislation that would address the changes made in the Affordable Care Act that essentially redefined the 40-hour work week. Many may have noticed the continuing discussion over employers reducing work hours; this is largely done as a consequence of the provision that reclassifies employees who work 30 hours be classified as full-time, and thus eligible for healthcare benefits. With ASA's support, the committee advanced legislation reforming this inequity. See our letter of support.

New Report Strikes at Heart of Affordable Care Act
American Supply Association
This week, the Congressional Budget Office, known as the official "scorekeeper" on Capitol Hill, issued one of its regular reports on the country's budget outlook. Embedded late in the report is a section exploring what the labor market will look like as a result of the Affordable Care Act. While the report paints an optimistic picture of our nation's deficit, it projects that nearly 2.3 million workers will leave the workforce by 2021. The report suggest that more people will choose not to work or to work fewer hours because they will no longer need to in order to have health insurance. The CBO also changed its projection of the number enrolled in private insurance through the ACA from 7 million to 6 million, and in Medicaid from 9 million to 8 million. Read the full report.

Beschloss: Keystone XL Oil Pipeline Stall Turns Travesty into Political Power Play
The Desert Sun
It's an obvious fact that the multiyear stall on the Keystone XL oil pipeline is primarily blocked by the shrill rhetoric of those self-styled climatological purists, who care little about America's economic well-being. This has now dragged on for three years, while the most vituperous challenges to this Canadian gift to America's energy development have become the target of political extremists, who are blocking this obvious benefit to accelerating U.S. oil derivatives' conversion into taxable revenues and employment, which should have been an obvious slam dunk.

Do You Know These Employee Recruiting Fundamentals?
By Mel Kleiman
The tools, technologies and techniques we use to attract potential employees keep evolving, but a great recruiting program is still all about basic "blocking and tackling." For starters, if you only recruit when you have a job opening, you cannot get the best. Waiting to recruit until you need someone is like grocery shopping when you're hungry — you'll buy the first thing that looks good that you can open and eat right away. Feeling pressured to hire someone causes you to be less selective and, more often than not, results in a poor hiring decision.
