The Copper mine supply-side experienced an appalling year by any standards in 2011, with what can only be described as a perfect storm of disruptions impacting output. Weighed by a combination of lower ore grades, technical issues, slower-than-expected ramp-ups and labor disputes, global mine production is anticipated to have fallen 200 KT year-over-year to 15.9 MT in 2011, said Barclays Capital in a research note. Manufacturing Jobs Start Year with Strong Gains

Last week's surprisingly strong jobs report spotlighted healthy employment gains in manufacturing — an industry that was expected to be hampered by Europe's economic downturn this year. So far, the nation's factories are defying the gloomy forecasts, adding 50,000 jobs in January — their strongest showing in a year — on top of 32,000 in December, the Labor Department said. Overall, employers added 243,000 jobs in January, the most in nine months. Manufacturing was the second-biggest gainer, behind professional and business services. More

US, Manufacturing Employment Jumps Higher in January

According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. employment numbers jumped significantly higher in January, with unemployment rate dropping to 8.3 percent. Nonfarm payrolls grew by 243,000, and manufacturers added 50,000 net new workers. These numbers continue to affirm the rebound and importance of manufacturing to economic recovery. Looking specifically at January 2012 figures, the bulk of new jobs in manufacturing came from durable goods sector, which was up 44,000 for the month. More
