HHS Expands Short-term Insurance Options Under ACA
American Supply Association
Last week, the Departments of Health and Human Services, Labor, and the Treasury issued a proposed rule that is intended to increase access to lower-cost healthcare options. The rule proposes to expand the availability of short-term, limited-duration health insurance by allowing consumers to buy plans providing coverage for any period of less than 12 months, rather than the current maximum period of less than three months. Short-term, limited-duration insurance, which is not required to comply with federal requirements for individual health insurance coverage, is designed to provide temporary coverage for individuals transitioning between healthcare policies, such as an individual in between jobs, or a student taking a semester off from school. The proposed rule, if finalized, would expand the amount of time people can have short-term health insurance plans that do not conform to certain benefits and consumer protection requirements under the Affordable Care Act. Under the new rule, these ACA-noncompliant plans, which are currently limited to three months, would be expanded to 12 months starting in 2019. To learn more, click here.

Commerce Recommendation on Imported Steel Risks Trade War
The Hill
The U.S. Department of Commerce is recommending hefty tariffs or quotas severely restricting imported steel and aluminum, which if taken would almost certainly lead to an international trade war. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross told reporters on Friday that his department's investigations found that imported steel is a threat to national security and recommended at least a 24.0 percent tariff on all steel imports from around the world under Section 232.
