Tax Advisers: Higher Rates Are Coming
The Hill    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As many Americans finish their returns to send to the IRS, some financial advisers say that, with deep budget deficits and the Bush tax cuts set to expire at the end of next year, they are counseling clients to prepare for a rise in their tax bill in the coming years. "We're going broke," said Clint Stretch, managing principal for tax policy at Deloitte Tax. "Whenever we've had big deficit-reduction measures in the past, it's always had some spending cuts and some tax increases." Economist Shepherdson: US Manufacturing Remains Healthy
Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
U.S. manufacturing remains strong, economist Ian Shepherdson said after the government reported an unexpected decline in factory orders for durable goods. "I'm reluctant to call this any type of turn," said Shepherdson, chief U.S. economist at High Frequency Economics of Valhalla, New York. "I don't think there's much wrong with the manufacturing sector." Shepherdson cited gains in the Institute for Supply Management's national factory index for his optimism in a radio interview recently on "Bloomberg Surveillance" with Tom Keene. He was less optimistic about the labor market. "I'm very skeptical of what's reported has actually happened," Shepherdson said. More

Will the US Finally Get a National Manufacturing Strategy?
IndustryWeek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Ill., and Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, announced on April 6 that they have each introduced bills to require the development of a national manufacturing strategy in order to boost traditional and high-tech manufacturing, spur American job growth and strengthen the middle class. America has lost 5.5 million manufacturing jobs, or one-third of the total, over the last decade. Lipinski's bipartisan National Manufacturing Strategy Act passed the House last year 379-38. The current version, H.R. 1366, has 11 Democratic and 10 Republican cosponsors. More
