Obama renews call on Congress for $30B job bill
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
President Barack Obama on June 11 repeated his call for Congress to pass a $30 billion package to foster hiring and help tackle painfully high levels of unemployment. "I'm hopeful the House will pass these measures next week and that the Senate will follow as soon as possible — with support from both Democrats and Republicans," Obama said in remarks delivered in the White House Rose Garden. After the worst recession in decades, many small businesses report trouble getting credit. Obama's proposal would establish a $30 billion fund to boost lending to small businesses looking to hire and expand operations by providing additional capital to community banks. More

China now set to enter US steel market with direct manufacturing in joint venture
Supply Chain Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In somewhat surprising news, among continued trade spats between the U.S. and China over steel-related products, China's fourth or sixth largest steel company (depending on estimates) has announced plans for a joint venture that will give China its first foot hold in U.S. steel manufacturing. Anshan Iron and Steel Group Corp. recently announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with U.S. producer Steel Development Company to gain a stake in SDC's reinforcing steel bar plant, making it the first Chinese company to invest in a U.S. steel mill. Trucking industry picking up, but few new jobs available
Jacksonville Business Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The unexpected upswing in trucking orders has jacked up shipping prices in the short term and raised long-term concerns about whether the shrunken industry can meet higher demand. With spot orders up nearly 300 percent last month from April 2009, trucking customers are spending more on transportation and likely will pass those increased costs onto the buyers of everything from produce to electronics. Logistics Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
Total U.S. logistics costs dropped in 2009, reflecting the effects of the recession and showing a significant decrease from 2008, according to the 21st State of Logistics Report, an annual report released by the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals. Business logistics costs fell to 7.7 percent of U.S. gross domestic product in 2009, as compared to 9.3 percent the previous year. Observations from the AMR Supply Chain Executive Conference: The constant interplay between efficiency and effectiveness
The 21st Century Supply Chain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As always the AMR/Gartner conference, held recently in Phoenix, was well attended, informative and, believe it or not, a lot of fun. This year we had some of our sales organization attend, and that is always bad news for the marketing folks. We have neither the stamina for nor the practice of the late nights, let alone the will to refuse to participate. Before the meeting, we heard that the meeting was fully booked and that people were being turned away. I am usually sceptical when I hear this, but I have to say all the sessions were packed with many people standing at the back of the hall. More

How do channel partners view each other? How are roles changing throughout the supply chain? Who is the client in the supply chain? What is the effect of leadership on the industrial supply chain? These were some of the questions that participants of the Midwest Distributors Association grappled with during the inaugural Executive Leadership Conference. More

In the past month, a number of large-scale products manufacturers (IBM, Ford, Intel, Procter & Gamble, Puma) and service providers (Kaiser Permanente) have issued sustainability focused supply chain related announcements. As noted by Green Advantages' Andrew Winston, a common theme of each of these mandates focuses on "transparency." Also, new reports have emerged that show companies are taking climate change programs to their respective supply bases as a means of supporting corporate responsibility reporting. More
