ASA Appointed to the ASHRAE 62.1 Technical Committee
American Supply Association
In an effort to be fully engaged in the Codes arena, the American Supply Association (ASA) is proud to announce that ASA will serve as a voting member in the development of ASHRAE 62.1 (Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality) standard. Hugo Aguilar, ASA’s Director of Codes & Standards, has been appointed to represent ASA as a full Committee voting member. The ASHRAE 62.1 standard is a nationally recognized approved American National Standard (ANSI). The standard specifies the minimum ventilation rates and other measures for new and existing buildings. Aside from ventilation rates, the standard also addresses system and equipment provisions such as variable air volume (VAV) systems, sensors, ducts and drain pans.

ASA Calls on Congress to Address Workforce Development Needs
American Supply Association
As Congress winds down its business for 2016, construction and supplier groups like ASA wrote to House leaders to turn their attention to workforce development. Specifically, the groups called on Congress to pass the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act (HR 5587). Bipartisan legislation that reforms, modernizes, and reauthorizes the Carl D. Perkins Act. By restoring near-term certainty to federal transportation programs and tax policy through passage of the FAST and PATH Acts in late 2015, Congress has set the stage for growth in construction, manufacturing, and business purchasing.

Fresh, Ground Copper?
ASA Materials Market Digest©
According to ScienceDaily, researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and at the University of California, Berkeley, have found that copper plays a key role in metabolizing fat, which is potentially helpful to reducing obesity. Before you go sprinkling the red metal on your salad, corrosion from copper plumbing pipe is known to leave a slight, bitter, medicinal taste to the water, and according to some health officials, when copper gets around 50 times more than 1.3 milligrams per liter, it can lead to stomach cramps and other health issues. However, this latest research suggests that in teeny-tiny doses, if copper doesn’t kill us, it can make us stronger. Visit MY ASA for the latest and archived installments of ASA’s Materials Market Digest©.
