ASA Safety Committee Free Webinar on Safety Knives
American Supply Association    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The National Safety Council estimates that each laceration costs employers $13,948. Rising insurance premiums, lost time and lower production are all hidden costs to lacerations. Find out what you can do to prevent this from happening at your company. On Wednesday, Dec. 15, at 2 p.m. EST, attend the FREE and interactive one-hour webinar with Tommy Landwehr, vice president of sales for Martor USA. Landwehr will discuss the importance of determining the level of current cutting tools used, looking at the tasks being performed and how to pick the proper tool for the job. He also will talk extensively on training for safety knives and how to implement your own safer cutting procedures. More

EPA, the Clean Air Act, and US Manufacturing

Members of U.S. Congress committed to helping U.S. industry save energy and become more globally competitive should think twice about undercutting existing federal laws that have the potential to spur efficiency upgrades at domestic manufacturing facilities. As we await final details of new regulations designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from major U.S. sources, despite criticism from industry representatives, it should be recognized that the appropriate and expected implementation of these rules will have the practical, lasting effect of achieving fuel savings and competitive advancements for affected U.S. manufacturers. How Can You Make Disruptive Innovation a Part of the Company's DNA?
Chief Executive    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The most frightening thing about disruptive innovation — the phenomenon documented in Clayton Christensen's "The Innovator's Dilemma," in which market-leading companies in industry after industry have missed game-changing transformations — is that the mistakes are not the result of "bad" management. Instead, as Alan Murray has noted in The Wall Street Journal, the disasters have occurred because managers were following the dictates of "good" management. More

Materials Market Digest Update
American Supply Association    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Since the ASA introduced Materials Market Digest in early 2005, this monthly report has provided timely information about important trends in a variety of different materials sectors. As a result, it has become one of the most valuable and sought after benefits that ASA offers. In September 2010, the author, Ed Scott, shared with the ASA staff that he would no longer be able to author the Materials Market Digest because of personal reasons. The good news is that his circumstances have since improved, yet his decision to no longer author the extensive monthly report remains permanent. ASA fully expects that the interruption in publishing the Materials Market Digest is temporary, and staff and volunteers are working together to begin making available this valuable member service in 1Q11. Your patience, suggestions and inquiries always are appreciated. More

Manufacturers, Are You Ready for Consumer Product Safety Commission That's Coming in 2011?
IndustryWeek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
No matter how extensive your design process may be, it is almost impossible to foresee all product failure modes and eliminate them. Consumers think up new ways to use and abuse products that you never anticipate. And then there is the irritating intervention of physics: No matter what you do, in some cases, glass will break, electrical connections will corrode and overheat, and water will leak. Most information on product failures comes from consumers. Most manufacturers have a toll-free hotline staffed by call takers who can diagnose consumer problems and arrange for service if necessary.
