California Water Issue Causes End of Year Snag
American Supply Association
From Dec. 8: As Congress wraps up its business for the year and sets the stage for bipartisan water resources legislation to reach the president's desk, a perennial issue between California legislatures entered the fray. Like so many issues, this pits Democrats against Republicans in the Golden State delegation regarding a long standing fight over access to water in the state. Late last week, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Senator Diane Feinstein collaborated to insert language that would provide drought relief to central and southern California. It would temporarily relax environmental standards and instruct federal officials to divert more water to farms and other users in the federal water infrastructure there. Lawmakers are expected to remain into the weekend and could face a Democratic filibuster before passing the bill, which includes funding for Flint among other water infrastructure programs.

How the Millennial Generation Will Impact Distribution
Industrial Distribution
From March 3: Like it or not, the Millennials are coming. One thing is clear: the distribution industry is suffering from a talent gap. In ID's "2015 Survey of Distributor Operations," nearly one-third of distributor respondents told us that "finding more qualified people" was currently a primary concern. According to a recent report by PwC, Millennials make up 25 percent of the workforce in the U.S., and should account for 50 percent as soon as 2020. With this in mind, whether or not businesses have the Millennial set in their crosshairs is irrelevant; they're truly the future of any business.

Top PHCP Wholesalers: 2016 Supply House Times Premier 150
Supply House Times
From June 16: With the exception of the tumultuous industrial pipe, valves and fittings segment, the industry as a whole enjoyed a productive 2015, so say respondents to the 2016 Supply House Times Premier 150 distributor survey. This time around, 2015 sales projections did not quite match up to actual 2015 performances. In last year’s survey, 87% of respondents predicted their sales would increase. This year’s Premier 150 survey reveals 79% of companies reported an increase in sales in 2015, down 4% from last year’s 83%. Fourteen percent of companies taking the 2016 survey say sales decreased in 2015.

ASA Leads Efforts in Washington to Pass E-Fairness
The Hill
From March 17: More than two dozen business groups are calling for the House Judiciary Committee to vote on legislation that would allow states to collect existing sales taxes on their residents' purchases from out-of-state online retailers. "America's merchant community urgently needs Congress to resolve this serious issue that continues to disadvantage many small businesses and the communities they serve across the country," the groups wrote in a letter sent to Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) on Tuesday. ASA to Congress: Prioritize Skills and Craft Trade Education
American Supply Association
From April 28: The volunteer leaders of the American Supply Association (ASA) along with its Government Affairs Committee have long identified the PHCP-PVF industry’s declining workforce as a priority we all must meet head on. With the successful passage of a pair of infrastructure bills by Congress, it is clear that one of the few things that Washington can agree upon is the improvement of our infrastructure. While a positive development, ASA and others in the construction and trades industries recently wrote leaders of Congress; alerting them to the reality that the various construction and distribution industries continue to experience shortages, requiring their attention to make career technical education a priority.

Businesses Hoping Temporary Injunction Becomes Permanent
American Supply Association
From Dec. 1: Just before Thanksgiving, as businesses were gearing up to implement the burdensome, new overtime rules by the Department of Labor (DOL), Judge Amos Mazzant of the Eastern District Court of Texas issued a preliminary injunction effectively postponing the start date, which was set to take effect on December 1. One of the most important items of this ruling should be that it is preliminary, aka: TEMPORARY. Law firms across the country have received questions regarding this ruling and how businesses should plan to move forward. Most importantly, many of have inquired whether the injunction will last into the next administration.
