Wholesalers to Congress: It's Time to Level the Playing Field
American Supply Association
This week, as Congress continues its work on myriad issues, ASA joined with other wholesaler-distributor associations to send a simple message: origin sourcing would equate to a tax increase. Reports out of the House are that Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte is supporting a practice known as origin-sourcing, which would require sellers like members of ASA to collect one rate for their branch and another for their customers. As our letter states, "Our organizations support the Marketplace Fairness Act (MFA) because the MFA is not a tax increase; rather, it wisely builds on the existing destination-sourcing system by simply and rationally empowering the states to enforce their own laws." ASA's region six affiliate, SWA, had its 86th Annual Convention this past weekend and early week. This year's event took place at the Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Florida. The convention included many great events including a seminar led by Corporate Lifecycles' Ian McDougall, keynote speaker Dean Karnazes, noted endurance runner, and an Industry Forum allowing fellow wholesalers to network and learn from one another. The Washington Post
Kevin Settles prides himself on being an early adopter. The owner of the mini-chain Bardenay in Boise, Idaho, says he was the first restaurateur in the country to get a federal license to distill liquor at a restaurant. He put Thai satay and baba ganoush on the menu despite his customers’ steak-centric palates. So when the healthcare law went into effect, Settles acted quickly.
