Tune Out Negativity & Get Ready for Increased Activity
ASA Advisor©
Sales for ASA members rose 5.4 percent in May, 2016, over May, 2015, a positive sign after April was flat. However, sales are running toward the lower bound of the forecast range, according to the latest installment of the ASA Advisor© from ITR EconomicsTM. At this time, a forecast revision is unnecessary as the leading economic and construction indicators all suggest improvement for ASA members through at least 2016. However, continued and close monitoring of this forecast and the indicators is merited over this next month, and a revision will be issued should conditions warrant. There are lots of positive signs in the U.S. and regional economies about which ASA members should take heart. Retail sales and construction indicators are both improving, suggesting core markets for ASA members are busy. Longer-range leading indicators, such as the Purchasing Managers Index and Corporate Bond Prices, are overtly positive, suggesting U.S. economic growth in late 2016 and early 2017. Tune out negativity from outside sources, and prepare for increasing activity in the second half of 2016.

Energy Drilling Slump Appears to Have Hit Bottom
ASA Materials Market Digest©
Although the Baker Hughes Rotary Rig Count for the week of June 24th showed a loss of three rigs to 421, that’s still above the 404 rigs in operation counted for the last week of May. A slight gain the following week marked the first increase in U.S. drilling rigs in 10 months. Higher oil prices are putting some fracking operations back in business.
