Some Manufacturing Heads Back to US
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Faced with rising costs, General Electric is moving production of its new energy-efficient water heater halfway around the world. The country it's leaving? China. The one it's bringing 400 jobs and a newly renovated factory? The United States. A small but growing band of U.S. manufacturers — including giants such as General Electric, NCR and Caterpillar — are turning the seemingly inexorable offshoring movement on its head, bringing some production to the U.S. from far-flung locations such as China. Others that were buying components overseas are switching to U.S. suppliers. More

ASA New Member Spotlight: Best Plumbing Tile & Stone
American Supply Association    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
ASA welcomes as one of its newest members in 2010 Best Plumbing Tile & Stone, based in Somers, N.Y. According to President Jonas Weiner, "We joined ASA to show our support for the organization's actions representing the interests of our industry." When Mel and Adele Weiner opened the company's doors in 1960, they wanted to provide their customers with the opportunity to see products in a showroom — a concept then unheard-of in the industry. After Jonas and his youngest brother, Jess, joined their parents in the business during the 1970s, the family grew the showroom business to include four showrooms and two trade centers in Westchester (N.Y.) and Fairfield (Conn.) counties, serving many of the surrounding areas. Although the company has evolved and become more sophisticated in the last 50 years, the fundamentals have not changed: It's still a "people" business with the same level of high-touch service excellence. Today, the company continues to be family owned and operated with Mel's eldest granddaughter, Kymberly, joining the business in 2006 and a team of more than 80 professionals, including a sales force with an average tenure exceeding 10 years. DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Despite growing signs the trucking industry finally is recovering from a four-year recession, access to credit remains stubbornly tight and cautious truckers seem reluctant to borrow, according to a quarterly survey by M&A firm Transport Capital Partners. A second-quarter survey of about 160 truckers, most of whom have annual revenues of more than $25 million, found that 60 percent expected credit availability to remain unchanged during the next six months, with 15 percent expecting credit conditions to tighten.
