Manufacturing Sector Shrinks For Third Straight Month

Manufacturing shrank at its sharpest clip in more than three years in August, the third month of contraction in a row, and firms hired the fewest workers since late 2009, a survey showed. The Institute for Supply Management said its index of national factory activity fell to 49.6 in August from 49.8 in July. The reading fell shy of the 50 median estimate in a Reuters poll of economists. A reading below 50 indicates contraction in the sector. More



July Construction Spending Down 0.9%

Construction spending fell 0.9% in July, missing analysts' estimates, to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $834 billion, the Commerce Department said Tuesday. Analysts polled by MarketWatch had expected a July gain of 0.5%. Private residential construction fell 1.6%, while private nonresidential construction fell 0.9%. Public construction spending fell 0.4%. Compared with July 2011, total construction spending is up 9.3%. Construction spending rose 0.4% in June. More

Nonfarm productivity increased at a much faster clip than initially thought in the second quarter as businesses largely held the line on hiring even as output rose, helping to keep inflation pressures tamped down.
