NLRB Issues Pair of Victories to Organized Labor

Knowing that the U.S. Senate is about to change hands, the Obama Administration's National Labor Relations Board issued two rulings in the past week that should concern business owners. Designed to offer even greater organizing freedom to employees, the NLRB rulings limit an employer's ability to control employee use of company email, including organizing labor activity on company time, using company resources. In another blow to businesses, the controversial "Ambush election" rule, which ASA has long opposed, has once again reared its head amidst the NLRB's final ruling. The NLRB's rule is designed to prevent employees from gathering the facts before they cast a ballot for or against union representation. The rule appears to be another attempt by the NLRB to push the agenda of large labor unions at the expense of employees and employers. The Coalition for a Democratic Workplace, which ASA is a proud member, has filed suit to invalidate the rule.

John Strong, ASA President – It has been one exciting, successful and fast year for me as ASA president. In my first letter of the year here, I emphasized my commitment to leading ASA through another year of growth, collaboration and participation. Now, at the end of my tenure, I can say I have successfully completed those commitments; though not without the help of many. YTD Profit Before Taxes Up for ASA Distributors

ASA member wholesaler-distributors reported a median sales growth of 3.0% for the month ending November 30, 2014, compared to the same month last year. Calendar year-to-date, all respondents reported a median sales increase of 5.0%, with 4.0% and 7.8% increases in the PHCP and industrial PVF segments, respectively. For the trailing 12 months, respondents reported a median sales increase of 4.3% for PHCP distributors and 8.0% for PVF distributors. Affiliated Distributors Recognizes F.W. Webb as PVF Affiliate of the Year

F.W. Webb Company received the PVF Affiliate of the Year award from Affiliated Distributors at the organization's recent annual North American meeting in Dallas. F.W. Webb Senior Vice President of Industrial Development Ernie Coutermarsh and Senior Vice President of Purchasing Ed Welch accepted the award on behalf of the company.

Emerson Sells Power Transmission Business to Regal Beloit

Emerson announced that it has agreed to sell its Power Transmission Solutions business unit to Regal Beloit Corporation. The transaction is valued at $1.44 billion, representing cash proceeds of $1.4 billion plus assumption of certain post-retirement liabilities, and is expected to close in the first calendar quarter of 2015, subject to regulatory approvals. Proceeds will be used for incremental share repurchase in fiscal 2015.
