Supply House Times Supply House of the Year: Winsupply
Supply House Times
From Sept. 24: Dayton, Ohio, is known as the birthplace of aviation, specifically as the place where the Wright brothers got their start in true entrepreneurial fashion. There's also a PHCP-PVF company based in Dayton that knows a thing or two about entrepreneurs and helping them live the American Dream of owning their own business. And Winsupply Chairman of the Board Rick Schwartz sees plenty of similarities between the recently rebranded industry heavyweight (more on the name change shortly) and Dayton's native aviation sons. "The Wrights weren't well-financed, avoided the limelight and were self-taught engineers," says Schwartz, who has been with the company 43 years. "They competed and succeeded against many well-funded people such as Samuel Langley who was funded by the Smithsonian. They used their own finances which they earned fixing and selling bicycles, some of which they manufactured."

EPA Releases Draft Assessment on the Potential Impacts to Drinking Water Resources from Hydraulic Fracturing Activities
Environmental Protection Agency
From June 11: In June, the Environmental Protection Agency released a draft assessment on the potential impacts of hydraulic fracturing activities on drinking water resources in the United States. The assessment, done at the request of Congress, shows that while hydraulic fracturing activities in the U.S. are carried out in a way that have not led to widespread, systemic impacts on drinking water resources, there are potential vulnerabilities in the water lifecycle that could impact drinking water. The assessment follows the water used for hydraulic fracturing from water acquisition, chemical mixing at the well pad site, well injection of fracking fluids, the collection of hydraulic fracturing wastewater (including flowback and produced water), and wastewater treatment and disposal.

State of the PVF Industry
Supply House Times
From Sept. 3: The industrial PVF industry is in the midst of a rough patch. And the usual culprit is driving the bus. "The price of oil drives everything else," says Michael Taylor, president of Long Beach, California-based Columbia Specialty Co. "The oil industry has become really good at boom and bust. When the bust comes, it triggers action quickly. In a snap of a finger thousands of people get laid off and capital projects get cut. When the price of oil goes down to a certain point, everything gets shut off and things get slashed and the PVF industry gets caught in a big part of that." Taylor was one of four industrial PVF executives who took part in a recent Supply House Times interview in Oak Brook, Illinois, following a meeting of the American Supply Association's Industrial Piping Division Executive Council. Taylor was joined by fellow council members Brian Tuohey (Collins Pipe & Supply), Kip Miller (Eastern Industrial Supplies) and Bill Zielinski (Chicago Tube & Iron).

8 Tips for Recruiting
National Association of Electrical Distributors
From July 30: At a recent conference I attended, the speaker said the electrical industry is "male, pale, and stale." Of course, everyone chuckled. Sadly, there's a lot of truth to it. As we all have heard time and time again - the baby boomers are retiring and the upcoming millennial generation will represent 75% of the workforce in 15 years. There’s no doubt that our industry is not the "sexiest" to attract applicants. Oh, and we have to keep them happy to retain them. How do we recruit them? What is that magic formula?

Why the Best Competitors are ASA Members
American Supply Association
From April 16: Recently announced acquisitions, i.e. Plumb Supply Co. purchasing Riback Supply and Security Supply joining WinWholesale, are certainly an indication that ASA members are the best competitors. The answer as to why is because ASA and its growing number of members share a common goal to be the most profitable and sustainable when delivering supply chain efficiency in a changing market place. Critical for this to happen is to hire and retain the very best employees, which is why ASA and its members share another long-range, strategic goal for employees to be the best trained, best educated and most professional in the industry. The 2014 Year in Review highlights so much about what members value most from their support and participation as well as the national organization’s key accomplishments for the industry.
