Unconvinced of the necessity of the so-called "Right to Repair" legislation, the New Jersey legislature has once again deferred action on the bill. This marks yet another year in which, despite spending significant resources, supporters of the legislation have failed to gain its passage. Joining in opposition to the legislation this year were nearly a dozen local unions, which expressed concern about the legislation's potential impact on safety, jobs and the economy. The ASA board of directors' elections is
taking place now through Feb. 28. All regular members in good standing with ASA are eligible to cast their votes for general director, and the mechanical division director is elected by ASA's mechanical division members. Candidate bios and audio campaign messages are also available online and in the December and January issues of AutoInc. magazine. Voting is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Betty Sutton, D-Ohio, proposed the "Cash for Clunkers" program to bolster the U.S. auto industry last year, she limited the government purchase incentives to cars produced in North America. But the exclusion soon aroused complaints from overseas automakers and free-trade advocates, and she relented. The $3 billion U.S. program ran over the summer and was open to all fuel-efficient cars, no matter where they were made. On New Year's Day a new federal system aimed at protecting consumers from buying rebuilt wrecks took full effect, only 17 years after the law requiring it was enacted. The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System requires all states, insurance companies and junkyards to report vehicles that were stolen or so badly damaged they were written off. According to Michelin, a special power train requires a special tire. And it claims to have embraced this philosophy when designing its first concept tire for electric vehicles. Known as the EV, the Michelin concept tire is intended to provide a range of benefits that include increasing the vehicle’s range between charges or reducing battery size to optimize use of interior space. At the same time, the tire is said to enhance driving safety and deliver superior longevity. Furthermore, says Michelin, the prototype tire offers a quiet ride that is ideally suited to a relatively noise-free power source. The 2010 Santa Fe crossover Hyundai this week is the latest of seven new models slated to come to market over the next 24 months designed to sustain the South Korean automaker’s recession-defying growth in the U.S. Hyundai raised its U.S. sales by 8 percent last year amidst the weakest new vehicle market in about three decades. It expanded its market share to 4.2 percent from 3.0 percent in 2008, partially through its Hyundai Assurance program that allowed buyers to return their vehicles with no penalty if they lost their jobs.
