The Obama administration is considering requiring all automobiles to contain a brake override system intended to prevent sudden acceleration episodes like those that have led to the recall of millions of Toyotas, the Transportation secretary, Ray LaHood, said. LaHood's comment came in response to questions from Senator Jay Rockefeller, a Democrat of West Virginia, at a hearing Tuesday of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Energy and Transportation. Nissan is recalling 540,000 vehicles worldwide to fix faulty brake pedal pins and inaccurate fuel gauges. Well, so much for racing through the gap left open by Toyota's recall saga. General Motors said that it will recall 1.3 million compact cars to fix a power steering problem. The timing is terrible. GM may have just benefited from Toyota's problems as the company's sales rose 11.5 percent in February. The more important number is that sales for the four brands it is keeping — Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC — rose 32 percent in the month. Ford Motor Co. sold more cars than General Motors in February, trumping its Detroit rival's monthly domestic sales total for the first time in 12 years. Thanks at least partially to impact of recalls on sales at Toyota Motor dealerships, Ford reported a 43.1 percent jump from a year ago, selling 142,285 vehicles in February compared with 141,849 for GM. Both automakers reported a sharp increase from February 2009 levels — GM's sales were up 11.5 percent — the industry suffered through its worst month in 19 years. More
