CAN is short for controller area network, which was developed by Robert Bosch in the early 1980s as a standard for vehicle bus communication. This protocol allowed networked controllers and components to communicate with each other without a single "host" or "master" computer. The goal was to make automobiles safer, more reliable, less polluting and more fuel efficient. Developed originally for the automotive sector, it is quickly becoming a standard communication system in many industries. More



House judiciary to review auto replacement parts in hearing

The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary has announced a hearing on Design Patents and Auto Replacement Parts for Monday, March 22. Chairman John Conyers, D-Mich., will preside over the full committee hearing. The Automotive Service Association (ASA) has contacted Congress to oppose Rep. Zoe Lofgren's, D-Calif., H.R. 3059, the Access to Repair Parts Act. H.R. 3059 would exempt copies of certain component parts from infringing U.S. design patents. Senate Bill 1368 is companion legislation in the U.S. Senate. More

The New England Service Station and Automotive Repair Association (NESSARA), an organization representing independent auto repairers in Massachusetts, reaffirmed results showing the so-called "Right to Repair" bill, S. 2268, is completely unnecessary. The Right to Repair Coalition claims that independent repairers cannot service vehicles properly because the necessary diagnostic information is not available. But frankly, that is not true.  More

NCOIL delays action on model parts act

The National Conference of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL) has opted to delay making a decision on its Model Act Regarding Motor Vehicle Crash Parts and Repair. The Property and Casualty Insurance Committee decided to move any further decisions on the Model Act to its summer meeting in Boston. The Automotive Service Association (ASA) submitted testimony in opposition to the Model Act Friday, March 5. More

Honda recalls 2007, 2008 Odysseys, Elements

Honda will recall about 344,000 Odysseys and 68,000 Elements in the U.S. from the 2007 and 2008 model years to fix their "vehicle stability assist modulator" that controls the electronic stability control. It says it has customer complaints about "brake pedals that feel 'soft' or that gradually exhibit a pedal height that gets lower (closer to the floor) before the vehicle stops." More

Congress questions NHTSA's effectiveness

The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce's Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection recently held a hearing titled, "National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Oversight: The Road Ahead." Members of the committee questioned David L. Strickland, NHTSA administrator, on NHTSA's functionality and effectiveness. Rep. Bobby Rush, D-Ill., chairman of the subcommittee, said the purpose of the hearing was to "examine NHTSA's configuration, its organization, and its performance in the areas of defects investigation, safety standards and enforcement." The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported new, lifesaving technology as one of the primary factors driving down the nation's vehicle fatality rates.
