The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary has announced a hearing on Design Patents and Auto Replacement Parts for Monday, March 22. Chairman John Conyers, D-Mich., will preside over the full committee hearing. The Automotive Service Association (ASA) has contacted Congress to oppose Rep. Zoe Lofgren's, D-Calif., H.R. 3059, the Access to Repair Parts Act. H.R. 3059
would exempt copies of certain component parts from infringing U.S. design patents. Senate Bill 1368 is companion legislation in the U.S. Senate.

Protection recently held a hearing titled, "National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Oversight: The Road Ahead." Members of the committee questioned David L. Strickland, NHTSA administrator, on NHTSA's functionality and effectiveness. Rep. Bobby Rush, D-Ill., chairman of the subcommittee, said the purpose of the hearing was to "examine NHTSA's configuration, its organization, and its performance in the areas of defects investigation, safety standards and enforcement."
