Toyota restricts orders to preserve parts supply

Toyota wants its U.S. car dealers to stop ordering more than 200 replacement parts made in Japan because it's worried about running out of them. Toyota has given its dealers a list of 233 replacement parts that shouldn't be ordered unless a customer needs one for a repair. Toyota says that its parts inventory is adequate despite production that was disrupted by the earthquake in Japan. More

Proposed federal funding for alcohol-detection devices could make them available as a new car option within 10 years, but some hope — and others fret — it will speed installation in every car. Legislation sponsored by Sens. Tom Udall, D-N.M., and Bob Corker, R-Tenn., would redirect $60 million in highway safety money over five years to a government-industry research project developing a prototype alcohol-detection device for cars. Senate considers alternatives to House's regulatory review proposal

Members of the United States Senate are considering a number of legislative options to expand scrutiny of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other agencies' rules. The House GOP-backed measure, H.R. 10 — "Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny (REINS)" Act — would require the U.S. Congress to approve major agency rules. The Senate is considering alternatives to the House measure, and many critics believe that H.R. 10 will have difficulty passing the Senate in its current form. More
