Building a successful business is a lot like cooking. If some of the ingredients are missing or not measured in correct proportion, the result is almost always less than expected and often inedible. Of the many businesses I have had the opportunity to work with over the years, almost all have had the ingredients needed to be successful and most of them have had the recipe; but they lacked a core component that is vital to the recipe. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will be conducting two training sessions in the International Autobody Congress and Exposition (NACE) Educational Theater. Agency representatives will be holding sessions on Thursday, Nov. 5, and Saturday, Nov. 7.

Determining the missing elements in misfires

Misfires are a common drivability issue. If the misfire rate exceeds the programmed threshold, the Engine Control Module will record the problem and turn on the Malfunction Indicator Lamp. If the rate is severe enough to threaten the health of the catalytic converter, the MIL will flash in an attempt to warn the driver that something is seriously wrong. Some misfires, though, are intermittent enough to be noticeable but not trip a code, and these can be the toughest of all to repair. More

GM backs out of Opel sale

The General Motors board voted this week to keep its Opel division, abruptly reversing an earlier decision to sell a majority stake in the European automaker to Magna International and its Russian partner, Sberbank. The announcement came on a day when GM posted a 4 percent gain in U.S. auto sales, its first year-over-year increase in 21 months. More

Ford adds 34 parts to Collision Truckload Program

Ford Customer Service Division  has refreshed the offerings on its Collision Parts Truckload Program. Thirty-four new parts – all with significant list-price reductions – are now available, including radiators, grilles, exterior lighting, mirrors, steel bumpers, fascias and a wheel. Meanwhile, Ford's other competitive collision parts initiative – "Steel the Sale" – will see its current parts list remain unchanged. More

Report: Toyota to pull out of Formula One, citing economy

Toyota plans to pull out of Formula One racing, the Mainichi newspaper in Japan reported. Toyota would follow Honda as the second major Japanese automaker to withdraw from the sport. Honda pulled out in December last year, citing a slowdown in the global economy. Brawn GP, which took over the old Honda team, won the 2009 F1 championship. More
Chrysler's big uphill climb

Fiat Group will soon unveil its plans to help get the struggling Chrysler Group back on track. But the question that won't be answered is whether these changes will come in time to save the company. The Italian automaker, which now owns a controlling minority stake in Chrysler, is expected to announce which Fiat models it intends to make available in the U.S. It also will disclose which Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep vehicles will be phased out. Floor mats cited in Toyota recall

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has found no evidence of mechanical causes of unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles, which has resulted in fatalities and Toyota's largest-ever recall, one of the company's top marketing executives said. "NHTSA recently closed another study finding that the only cause of unintended acceleration was an out-of-position or inappropriate floor mat," said Bob Carter, Toyota division group vice president. "There simply is no evidence of any other cause."
