Economy shows signs of rebound

Recent evidence from the Detroit Three and the broader economy is making it difficult to deny that the U.S. economy — even including Michigan — is beginning to heal. That's despite the fact that many people remain out of work, housing prices are weak and foreclosures continue. In the last two weeks: Ford Motor Co. reported a nearly $1-billion third-quarter profit.
The Chrysler Group said it generated an undisclosed level of cash in September. And General Motors Co. said it has generated $3.3 billion in cash since its July 10 exit from bankruptcy. More

members of NCOIL's Property and Casualty Insurance Committee to oppose NCOIL's Model Act Regarding Auto Airbag Fraud. The committee will review the model act in meetings that commence today.

Motor Trend magazine named the
Ford Fusion mid-sized sedan as its 2010 Car of the Year on Tuesday. The award includes both the gas-only and hybrid versions of the Fusion. This year's Car of the Year was selected from among a field of 22 different cars all of which were newly introduced or, like the Fusion, substantially redesigned for the 2010 model year.

General Motors Co. is promising to keep its headquarters in Detroit in return for expanded state tax credits. The Michigan Economic Growth Authority gave the go-ahead to extend tax credits the company won in
June for agreeing to build a new small car at its Orion Township plant near Pontiac in Michigan. The new agreement says GM must keep 22,500 employees in the state rather than just 20,000 to get the tax credits.

Jeeps because their automatic transmissions were assembled without a system to warn if the fluid is overheating. The automaker told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration it is recalling 2007-08 Wranglers to install the warning system.

About 37 percent of U.S. Saab dealers will close as part of General Motors Corp.'s planned sale of the ailing Swedish car brand to Koenigsegg Group AB, a GM spokeswoman said. GM spokeswoman Ryndee Carney said the company had sent letters to 81 of the 218 U.S. Saab dealers notifying
them they will be expected to terminate their dealerships when the sale closes around the end of November.

repayment of $8 billion owed to the United States and Canada. The results gave analysts and potential investors the first look at GM's books for the period from July 10, when the top U.S. automaker emerged from a fast-track sale out of a bankruptcy engineered and financed by the Obama administration, through the end of the third quarter.
