Leahy files antitrust repeal amendment to Senate Healthcare Reform Act
Automotive Service Association    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., chairman of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, has filed an amendment to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, H.R. 3590, to repeal the McCarran-Ferguson Act for health insurers. "This amendment will prohibit the most egregious anticompetitive conduct-price fixing, bid-rigging and market allocations-conduct that harms consumers, raises health care costs, and for which there is no justification," said Leahy. "Subjecting health and medical malpractice insurance providers to the antitrust laws will enable customers to feel confident that the price they are being quoted is the product of a fair marketplace." NHTSA proposes passenger ejection crash safety test
MotorTrend Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has proposed a new crash safety test with the intention of reducing passenger ejections through side widows. The test involves propelling an impact device toward the side windows up to four times in order to simulate a roll over. Per the NHTSA, the mass is based on that of a 50th percentile male's upper torso on the window opening during an occupant ejection. The requirement would measure how far the impact device moves beyond the window's plane. This new standard, if applied, would affect just passenger-adjacent side windows of most vehicles.   More

U.S. November auto sales struggle to gain ground
The Associated Press via Google News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
U.S. auto sales struggled to gain ground in November and big improvements aren't expected until people stop worrying about losing their jobs. Sales were flat compared to last November, according to Autodata Corp. Even higher incentives couldn't push the needle much beyond the dismal lows seen a year ago, when a credit freeze and the financial meltdown kept car buyers at home. Fuel-efficient cars showed continued strength, as did crossovers, which are as roomy as SUVs but are built on lower car frames, bolstering fuel economy. Truck sales were again weak. More
