American Sets World Record

Randall Bal of the United States set a world record in the 50-meter backstroke on the last day of a short-course swimming World Cup meet in Berlin. Bal broke the four-day-old record with a time of 22.87 seconds, beating Peter Marshall by 0.03. Marshall, also from the United States, set the record of 23.05 in Stockholm.

Shortcut to Distance Running Might Be Worth Second Look

A recent article from a nationally distributed running magazine touted a particular type of workout as a potential "shortcut to success" in distance running performance. The workout recently described in Runners' World consists of substituting very high intensity, short duration bouts for a good chunk of the longer, slower distance efforts that comprise most distance runners' routines. Specifically, it is proposed that one can trade off 25-30 miles of weekly steady running for thrice-weekly sessions of eight to twelve fast-paced 30-second sprints, alternated with 3-minute recovery walks.
