Olympic swimmer Torres speaks of overcoming age

Olympic swimmer Dara Torres, who won three silver medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics at age 41, was the speaker at Memorial Hospital's inaugural Celebrating Women and Wellness event in Fremont, Calif. Torres won her first medal, a gold, at the 1984 Olympics. Her experience there was typical of a young Olympian. She felt awe and intimidation. When she made her most recent Olympic appearance at 41, her outlook had changed, and she found she had the mental advantage over her young competitors. More



Dubai drops out as host of 2013 swimming worlds

Two national swimming records broken in California

A crowd estimated at 2,000 was stunned not once - but twice - as two national records were broken during the annual CIF Southern Section swimming championships in Long Beach, Calif. Edison (Huntington Beach, Calif.) senior Cindy Tran set the bar extremely high while winning the Division I 100-yard backstroke in a national-record 51.85 seconds. The record had been 52.86 by future Olympian Natalie Coughlin of Carondelet (Concord, Calif.) in 1998. The very next morning, however, Torrance (Calif.) senior Vladimir Morozov led off the Division III 200-yard freestyle relay with a national-record 19.43 leg for 50 yards. The previous 50 free standard had been 19.49 by Jimmy Feigen of Churchill (San Antonio, Texas) in 2008. More

First Lady Michelle Obama has praised U.S. food manufacturers for agreeing to cut 1.5 trillion calories from their products, in a boost for her anti-obesity campaign. She said that 16 corporations accounting for up to 25 percent of the American food supply chain would trim a total of one trillion calories by 2012 and 1.5 trillion calories by 2015. More
