2 foods you should never, ever eat after exercise
Food Consumer    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Did you know that what you eat directly after exercising – typically within two hours – can have a significant impact on the health benefits you reap from your exercise? Consuming sugar within this post-exercise window, will negatively affect both your insulin sensitivity and your human growth hormone (HGH) production. A recent study in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that eating a low-carbohydrate meal after aerobic exercise enhances your insulin sensitivity. This is highly beneficial, since impaired insulin sensitivity, or insulin resistance, is the underlying cause of type 2 diabetes and a significant risk factor for other chronic diseases, such as heart disease. Sitting, even after workout, can cut lifespan
CNN    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A new study debunks the theory that an hour of exercise a day is all you need to live a long life. Turns out, people who spend more time sitting during their leisure time have an increased risk of death, regardless of daily exercise. American Cancer Society researchers tracked the activity levels and death rates in more than 123,000 healthy men and women for 13 years. They found women who spend over six hours a day sitting during leisure time (watching TV, playing games, surfing the web, reading) were 40 percent more likely to die sooner than women who spend less than three hours sitting. Men who spend more time sitting have a 20 percent increased risk of death. Essentially, those who sit less, live a longer life than those who don't. More

Dupree's London dream getting ready to take off
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Tucker Dupree swims straight into darkness every time he leaps into the pool. And yet, despite the disease that has robbed him of much of his sight, he couldn't feel any more at home than he does when he's in the water training to be a Paralympic champion. "This pool stays the same length," he said. "The walls don't move." With each lap and every stroke, Dupree ignores the black hole where his central vision used to be. Armed only with his peripheral sight, he's driven by the feeling that came with representing his country in the Paralympics two years ago in Beijing and doing it again in London in 2012. More

Knee ligament tears often need no surgery: study
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Most people who have a common knee ligament injury fare just as well with intense physical therapy as they do with surgery, according to a study comparing the two techniques released recently. Researchers said that focusing on rehabilitation first could prevent more than half of operations done to repair a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which lies beneath the kneecap and attaches the thigh bone to the shin bone. Autom is a weight-loss coach. She knows how much you've been exercising, and she knows your diet. With a touch of your finger, she knows if you're in a good mood. Autom is also a robot, and her inventor hopes she can help people lead healthier lives. Cory Kidd, co-founder and chief executive of Intuitive Automata Inc., built the first incarnation of Autom by hand while studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab and seeing patients at Boston Medical Center's clinic. Mr. Kidd, 32 years old, saw an opportunity to create "something that could be a very large benefit," he said. More
