diseases. That's a good thing. They have also been making rapid progress in getting access to genetic material during pregnancy, according to a new report. That means expectant parents may be able to accurately tell what sex the baby will be as early as seven weeks into a pregnancy. That's troubling.

Complaints of celiac disease are on the rise in the United States, with more and more people growing ill from exposure to products containing gluten. Nearly five times as many people have celiac disease than during the 1950s, according to a recent study. Another report found that the rate of celiac disease has doubled every 15 years since 1974 and is now believed to affect one in every 133 U.S. residents.

American women who gave up hormone therapy after a study linked the menopause treatment to breast cancer and heart disease also cut back on mammograms, perhaps as a result of fewer doctor visits, researchers said. Mammography rates fell in 2005 for the first time since at least 1987, stumping public health officials who recommend routine use to detect small,
easier-to-treat tumors.

A novel imaging probe, developed by Massachusetts General Hospital, investigators may make it possible to diagnose accurately a dangerous infection of the heart valves. In their Nature Medicine report, the team from the MGH Center for Systems Biology describes how the presence of Staphylococcus aureus-associated endocarditis in a mouse model was revealed by PET imaging with a radiolabeled version of a protein involved in a process
that usually conceals infecting bacteria from the immune system.
