Survey reveals poor oral hygiene habits in US children

In celebration of National Children's Dental Health Month, dental service corporation Delta Dental has published the results of a new survey to raise awareness about the importance of oral health in children. The survey indicates relatively poor oral care behavior in under 12-year-olds that contributes to many American children having cavities.

Concussion repercussion?: NFL names 1st chief medical adviser
NBC News
The NFL, embroiled in safety and legal issues over player concussions, named its first chief health and medical adviser recently. Dr. Betsy Nabel, a biomedical researcher and cardiologist, will serve as the league's senior medical expert, the NFL announced. Nabel also is president of Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Why your office can handle hiring new dentists and staff

In the last week, I experienced two opposite attitudes about the growth of dental practices. On the one hand, I was talking with a small group of dentists who understand that group practices are growing quickly and changing the landscape of dentistry. On the other hand, I talked with a dental office manager who played a significant role in improving her dental practice – she had substantially increased the production thanks to filling schedules and knew the dentist was considering hiring another dentist. However, when faced with the idea that the practice may need to hire additional support staff, this office manager was completely against that kind of growth.

Illinois Senate considering comprehensive concussion protocol bill

An Illinois senator has proposed a new bill that would call for a comprehensive and structured approach to any player involved in a potential head injury during any sports activity in the state. As first reported by the Springfield State Journal-Register, Illinois state Sen. Dan Kotowski has proposed a new bill that calls for each school to maintain a "concussion oversight team."

Too old for cavities? Think again, dentists say

Alice Boghosian, a dentist in Niles, Illinois, says she was working on an 87-year-old patient recently when she discovered a cavity and exclaimed, "You have got to be kidding me." Boghosian was not surprised by the patient's age. She was surprised because the patient was her own mother. Adults of all ages need to know, dentists say, that cavities are not just for kids. The risk can even rise as we age.
