High-tech mouthguards help players

In a New Zealand first, Hutt Old Boys Marist rugby club team doctor Doug King has imported mouthguards with micro-chipped technology from the United States to measure impacts received on the field. The premier side wore the mouthguards during the Swindale Shield match against Wainuiomata and, although there were no recorded concussions, one player recorded an impact of 126 G-Force.

Assessing the association between bisphosphonate exposure and delayed mucosal healing after tooth extraction
The Journal of The American Dental Association
Tooth extraction in patients exposed to bisphosphonates is considered a risk factor for osteonecrosis. The authors evaluated the time to mucosal healing and frequency of osteonecrosis after tooth extraction in participants exposed to BPs. The authors compared wound healing after tooth extraction in participants exposed to BPs with that in control participants who had not been exposed to BPs. Variables included age, sex, type of BP therapy, BP exposure time and C-terminal telopeptide test results.

Medicare claim denial process begins May 1
American Dental Association
Medicare will "turn on" a claim denial process May 1 affecting dentists and other healthcare providers ordering particular Medicare-covered items or services for Medicare beneficiaries. As of that date, a provider of a covered clinical laboratory, imaging, durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics and supplies or home-health service will not be paid if the ordering or certifying practitioner has not enrolled in Medicare or properly opted out.
