Achieving zero infections is our greatest
challenge
Infection Control Today Share
All around the world prevention and reduction of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) is undergoing a
resurgence. Levels of media, public, business and political engagement in HAI prevention and reduction in the developed world are unprecedented. Regardless, achieving fewer HAIs is elusive. In many clinical settings in developing nations, the concept of zero HAIs is a distant and seemingly unattainable, audacious goal thought to be the ambitious product of large, well- resourced nations. Washing sheets in ozone could stop hospital superbugs

You've just got into your hospital bed.
You'd expect the sheets to be clean and free of any infection.
Shockingly they may not be. If the last patient to use them was infected with the superbug C.difficile, its spores may still be on the sheets, able to pass on the infection to you.
Last year, 36,000
hospital patients suffered the severe diarrhoea that C.diff causes and nearly 6,000 died from it. The Government has invested millions in a campaign to cut infection rates from this superbug, mainly by concentrating on hand washing.
But some experts believe this ignores the transport system that carries the bugs into wards on a daily basis: the laundry, mops and cloths used for cleaning.

The revolving door at the hospital
The Wall Street Journal

To save costs, hospitals for years have been discharging patients after shorter stays. But at the same time more people are having to return to hospital for
additional care within a month of their initial treatment, according to a major new study of Medicare heart-failure patients.
The findings raise the possibility that the drive to reduce the length of time patients spend in hospitals—a key cost-containment strategy for both government and private insurers—may have backfired when it comes to reducing overall health expenditures related to heart-failure admissions.
