Healthcare facilities today are being confronted with steadily increasing rates of crime, including assault, rape and murder, warns a new Sentinel Event Alert issued by The Joint Commission.
Specifically, U.S. healthcare facilities have experienced "36 incidents in 2007, 41 in 2008 and 33 in 2009,"
according to the Sentinel Alert statement. Although the Commission notes that the numbers may be lower than reality due to underreporting, the number of reports has sharply risen from 2002 to 2003, when incidents were in the single digits.

Michelle Farber, RN, CIC, Mercy Hospital's senior infection prevention officer, has notified Resurgent Health and Medical that they have surpassed the 10,000 handwashing milestone. As part of a new approach to prevent healthcare-acquired infections (HAIs), Mercy's ICU installed the Resurgent Health and Medical handwashing system in December 2009.

Lapses in procedures aimed at fighting infections are common in ambulatory surgical centers, a study shows. The lapses include safe hygiene methods and improper handling of medications and equipment.
The study by the CDC is published in the June 9, issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association. Researchers say they found at least one lapse in infection control practices in 46 of 68 ambulatory surgical centers studied, endangering patients.
