Survey results released today by Orkin, LLC and the American Society for Healthcare Environmental Services (ASHES) reveal that staffing is currently the most pressing issue for healthcare environmental services (ES) professionals. The survey of more than 2,000 ASHES members asked about sustainability practices, pest management challenges and which job responsibilities weigh the most on their minds. More

The health care industry has a garbage problem. It's not just that hospitals, doctors' offices, clinics and other health facilities generate several billion pounds of garbage each year: buried in that mountain of trash are untold numbers of unused disposable medical devices as well as used but recyclable supplies and equipment, from excess syringes and gauze to surgical instruments. The problem, fueled by a shift toward the use of disposables that made it simple to keep treatment practices sterile, has been an open secret for years, but getting the health care industry to change its habits has not been easy. No organization currently tracks how much medical trash the United States produces—the last known estimate, from the early 1990s, was two million tons a year. Only recently has the industry begun grappling with the amount of waste it generates, and one reason is that financially stressed hospitals are seeking ways to cut costs. More

Oversight of ASCs necessary for patient safety

The study, "Infection Control Assessment of Ambulatory Surgical Centers," in the June 2010 issue of JAMA, noted that two-thirds of 68 ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) surveyed had one or more deficiencies in infection control practice. The survey was done to test an assessment tool to be used by surveyors conducting Medicare surveys of ASCs. Assessments covered five important areas of infection control. More



Big decrease in Scottish C. diff and MRSA rate

Rates of C. diff and MRSA in Scottish hospitals have continued to fall over the past year, according to figures released by the Scottish government. Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said levels of MRSA dropped by 31 percent in the first quarter of 2010 compared with the same period last year. There was also a 44 percent reduction in C. diff cases in patients over 65. The Scottish government has said tackling hospital acquired infections is a "top priority". More

Hospital employment declines 0.05% in June

Employment at the nation's hospitals declined by 0.05 percent in June to a seasonally adjusted 4,705,700 people, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. That's 2,200 fewer people than in May, but 33,600 more than a year ago. More
