Leadership can be the differentiator in HAI prevention
Infection Control Today

In a new study published in Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology, researchers in Michigan led by Sanjay Saint, MD, MPH, found that leadership plays a critical role in hospital infection prevention and control programs. Through a three-phase study of invited hospitals whose lead infection preventionist had completed a quantitative survey on HAI prevention, Saint, et al. (2010) sought to better to understand which behaviors are
exhibited by leaders who are successful at implementing HAI prevention practices in U.S. hospitals. A survey in phase one, data collection in phase two, and site interviews in phase three contributed to the findings.

HAIs greatly increase the length and cost of hospital stays
Infection Control Today

Adults who developed healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) due to medical or surgical care while in the hospital in 2007 had to stay an average of 19 days longer than adults who didn't develop an infection, (24 days versus five days), according to the latest News and Numbers from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
For patients with an HAI, the rate of death in the hospital, on average, was six times as high as the
rate for patients without an HAI (9 percent versus 1.5 percent). Also, on average, the cost of a hospital stay of an adult patient who developed an HAI was about $43,000 more expensive than the stay of a patient without an HAI ($52,096 versus $9,377).

Canadian researchers advise hospitals to stock up on critical pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks and respirators in anticipation of a
potential pandemic. In advance of the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic, they point to the variation in what was known about the impact that an influenza pandemic might have on stockpiles of facial protective equipment (FPE) as well as on employees' ability to cope with pandemic situations.

Putting alcohol-based hand cleansers in work places slashed the incidence of several common infections and reduced the number of workdays lost, a randomized
trial showed.
Access to the disinfectants was associated with odds ratios of 0.35 to 0.45 (P<0.05) for reported colds, fevers, and coughs in an unblinded trial with 129 participants, according to Nils-Olaf Hübner, MD, of the Institute of Hygiene and Environmental Medicine in Greifswald, Germany, and colleagues.
