Workplace diversity must include buy-in from whites The Associated Press via Issues In Higher Education Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Organizational efforts to create and maintain an inclusive multicultural environment often face resistance by whites, says a University of Michigan researcher. "Without the support of whites, organizations and educational settings will fail in their attempts to navigate and manage the complexities of diverse work forces and constituencies," says Dr. Jeffrey Sanchez-Burks, an associate professor of management and organizations at Michigan's Ross School of Business. Younger people are especially hungry both to learn and to receive affirmation that they are doing a good job. I've found the best ones are generally much more motivated by incremental education and acknowledgement than they are by a modest bump in salary. Of course, the same qualities that make younger colleagues so responsive to the education and praise you offer may also make them susceptible to negative feedback loops, so be mindful of the context into which you toss them. Say a hospital patient needs an x-ray, typically a procedure that is widely understood in American culture. No problem. But what if that patient is Russian, once lived near Chernobyl in the Ukraine, site of a terrible nuclear accident in the 1980s, and is terrified at the thought of radiation, plus that person not only does not speak English, but does not speak because he is deaf? Explaining becomes a major task. More For women in the workplace, an 'upgrade problem' The New York Times Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
Despite efforts to recruit ever more women into management, the number of female leaders dwindles dramatically the closer one gets to the top. It is a conundrum that prompts soul-searching at any gathering of professional women in the industrialized world, most of whom still struggle to chart paths to the summit of business when the signposts are often hidden — or in a language that few women speak. What are your initial impressions of a physically disabled woman, a transgender woman, and a visually impaired man? Our experiences in life and stereotypical messages propagated in the media often prevent us from seeing people for who they really are. The values behind these words denote a sense of "other" or describe how people may be different from a proposed "normal." Is it no wonder that creating an inclusive workplace for these people can seem challenging? Unfortunately, such labels do not capture the capabilities of a person, and certainly not those of a potential employee. More
