Bilingualism, a workplace advantage for Hispanics in US
Fox News Latino    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Bilingualism, is an advantage for Hispanics since it allows them to get better jobs in the United States, said Pedro Pierluisi, Puerto Rico's resident commissioner to Congress. He emphasized the value of Spanish in the new context of U.S. society during the second day of the 9th International Conference of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, or HACU, which is being held in San Juan. "An employee in the United States who is bilingual in English and Spanish can do his work easily with firms located in Central and South America, at the same time that the one who only speaks English is limited to working with businessmen who express themselves in that language," Pierluisi said. Are companies discriminating against jobless
    employment candidates?

WHTM-TV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Federal officials say they're looking into reports that some companies are ruling out unemployed candidates for any job openings. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is trying to figure out how often that happens and how it could violate federal discrimination laws. More

How to achieve an effective LGBT inclusion initiative
Diversity Executive magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Sexual orientation, long an issue rarely discussed in corporate settings, has become a featured aspect in the diversity and inclusion initiatives of many global companies. Sexual orientation has gotten increased attention as attitudes towards lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgendered individuals (LGBT) have become more supportive and the LGBT community has become more visible and outspoken in seeking equal rights. It's babies — not discrimination — that hold back women
    in the workplace

The Telegraph (Opinion)    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The working woman's enemy is not some pinstriped, misogynistic boss, cackling evilly as he slams the boardroom door. Nor, in fact, is it men in general. There is plenty of evidence that British men want to be more involved in rearing their children. But our system of parental leave is so heavily skewed that both sexes have little choice but to succumb to an outdated status quo. More

Top 10 trends in employment background screening for 2011
Recruiting Trends    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Due to recent high unemployment, some job seekers are in a "Catch 22"situation where they have bad credit because they cannot find a job but cannot find a job because they have bad credit. As a result, some states have passed laws or are considering laws to restrict the use of credit reports and employment and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is looking closely at this area and has filed lawsuits alleging discriminatory use. Generation 'Y do I have to do it like that?'
ZDNet    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Working with international company workforces I’m often struck by the sheer diversity of individuals across cultures, age groups and skill sets who are confident in their ability to communicate and collaborate well, writes Oliver Marks, who provides seasoned independent consulting guidance to senior management. There seems to be a personality type that has a huge appetite for learning and using ever more frequent waves of new technology developments that is independent of any particular demographic, and who are eager to participate in group activities online or off. Want that new job? Give up the smokes
MSNBC    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There are roughly five applicants for every job opening these days, and that means employers can be picky if they want. It turns out some are very picky. When the help-wanted signs go up, the openings increasingly are including requirements that go beyond mere job qualifications. Some hiring managers are routinely excluding the unemployed, smokers, people with accents or non-traditional hair styles, college dropouts, and anyone with bad credit. More

    Americans staying in workforce longer
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
So much for early retirement. Cash-strapped Americans aged 55 and older are staying in the workforce longer and even returning to work because of inadequate Social Security benefits and lagging retirement plans, a study by the Employee Benefit Research Institute finds. The trend could lead to a dramatically different workplace dynamic — a shift that brings both pros and cons, researchers say. More
