DiversityInc    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Imagine a medication that could drastically reduce your risk of stroke. Now imagine not having access to it. Thousands of Americans with diabetes and heart disease are at increased risk for stroke, but many lack access to treatment because of barriers in income, language or culture. Thanks to an initiative from Kaiser Permanente's Care Management Institute, a simple, low-cost preventative treatment is becoming more readily available, especially to traditionally underserved populations, including Blacks, Latinos, Asians and American Indians. Unlawful discrimination based on pregnancy still exists
KRXI-TV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Most working mothers find it challenging to find a good work/life balance. For working expecting mothers, it can sometimes be difficult even keeping a job even though federal law is on their sides. Pregnancy discrimination in the workplace is still common despite the 1978 Pregnancy Discrimination Act, which requires most U.S. employers to treat pregnant women the same way they would treat other employees. The only countries to track employment by ethnicity are the U.S. and the U.K., where the hotel and catering sector ranked No. 1 in ethnic diversity. More

Take this pill — It can cure your racism
Diversity Executive    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
If only it were that simple. Let's face it, folks: We could probably all just pack up our bags and go home if complex diversity issues had such a straightforward solution. That’s why it’s borderline insulting to read about a product that could potentially "cure" racism. A recent study by Oxford University found that a pill called Propranolol — which is supposed to alleviate high blood pressure, migraines and other ailments — apparently has some sort of impact on the part of the central nervous system that controls subconscious attitudes on race. Are you overlooking valuable potential employees?
Inc. Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Disability Funders Network says that people with disabilities constitute the largest minority group in the U.S. – approximately 20 percent of the total population. This group also has an unemployment rate 10 times greater than the national rate. We all know it's wrong to discriminate, but it seems outrageous that so many employers aren't utilizing this qualified group of people who are ready and able to work. Thankfully, there are readily available resources out there to help us diversify our workforce. More

Religion at work can bring fire and brimstone
MSNBC    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Employees have religious rights in the workplace, but wearing your religion on your sleeve at work can be hazardous to your career. The question of how much religion in the workplace is too much is playing out in a California court this week with a closely watched case involving a former NASA employee. More

Does diversity have a downside?
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Many people assume "a diverse workforce" entails equality of opportunity — laws, or some social mechanism, ensuring a healthy balance between men and women and preventing discrimination in the workplace by gender, age, ethnicity, class and so forth. But a study as globally ambitious as Forbes Insights' "Diversity & Inclusion: Unlocking Global Potential—Global Diversity Rankings by Country, Sector and Occupation" necessarily introduces some complexities and trade-offs in what can be measured and compared among countries in a meaningful way.
