The fractious debate over health care has obscured the promise this bold legislation has to reduce health disparities in the United States. In 2000, this country set a goal of eliminating disparities in health among different racial, ethnic and socioeconomic groups. Health care reform is needed in this country for everyone, regardless of race, but I believe it is also critical to our achieving the overarching goal of eliminating disparities in health. More

National Institutes of Health (NIH) wants a few really new and different ideas on how to achieve more ethnic diversity in the biomedical sciences, and is prepared to pay up to $10 million for those ideas. According to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, there's been a 17 percent jump in the number of age-discrimination complaints filed since the recession began in 2007. A new benchmarking tool is to be introduced to allow businesses to find out how well they are tackling inequality at in the workplace. The National Equality Framework for Business will let businesses work out whether they are meeting minimum standards as well as giving them advice on creating a more diverse workplace and attracting a wide range of customers. More men make harassment claims

Since the start of the recession, a growing number of sexual harassment complaints have come from men. Some 16.4 percent of all sexual harassment claims — or 2,094 claims — were filed by men in fiscal 2009, up from 15.4 percent, or 1,869 claims, in fiscal 2006, according to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. By 2031 almost 26 percent of Canada's population will be foreign-born and 31 percent will be visible minorities, according to new projections released by Statistics Canada. Almost half of working age population will be either foreign-born or have at least one parent born in another country. In Metropolitan areas such as Toronto and Vancouver visible minorities will be the majority while their population will double in other Canadian cities. More
