Working with 5 generations in the workplace
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
From a recent conversation with Jeanne Meister, we are facing a new future in terms of demographics at work: we will soon have five generations in the workplace at once. In prior years, we have had three or four generations at a time with some but not vast differences in work behavior. More

Social media encourages workplace diversity
Dynamic Business magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Social media users are a diversity asset to businesses, according to Nareen Young, CEO of Diversity Council Australia. She said that while there were risks in allowing social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter in the workplace, with sensible risk management policies this connectivity could be beneficial. Young said social media acted as a channel to attract and retain diverse people of talent. "Access can be open to anyone with a computer and an account regardless of age, gender, marital status, race, ethnicity et cetera." More

The DiversityInc Top 10 Companies for LGBT Employees
DiversityInc    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
This list really should be called The DiversityInc Top 10 Companies for LGBT Employees and Allies, since companies that provide inclusive corporate cultures for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) employees report increased engagement and support from their friends and relatives as well. The criteria for determining this list is somewhat different from the other top 10 demographic lists, since there is far less available data on LGBT people than on groups broken down by race/ethnicity or gender. Emergency rooms provide care of last resort for mentally ill
Kaiser Health News and NPR    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Mentally ill patients often languish in hospital emergency rooms for several days, sometimes longer, before they can be moved to a psychiatric unit or hospital. At most, they get drugs but little counseling, and the environment is often harsh. The problem has only worsened during the economic downturn. More

Compassion, not punishment, helps diffuse workplace anger
HealthDay News via Bloomberg Businessweek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The best response to workplace anger is compassion, not punishment, a new study suggests. Supportive reactions by managers and co-workers to an employees' angry outburst can actually lead to positive changes in the workplace, while chastising or taking no action accomplishes nothing. More

Leading older employees
Harvard Business Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Being a leader is tough enough when you look and sound the part, when you've got the war stories to prove you've toiled in the trenches and earned your way to the top. But leading without that authority, managing employees 10 and 20 years older than you, receiving a mandate from the top but lacking the backing of the troops in the middle and at the bottom of the organization — that is a real challenge. Missouri lawmakers pass workplace discrimination bill
The Associated Press via Bloomberg Businessweek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
People who file lawsuits claiming they were fired because of discrimination would face a stronger legal standard and be limited in the amount of money they could collect if the governor signs legislation given final legislative approval. The bill would require such plaintiffs who sue their former employers to show that discrimination was a "motivating factor" in their dismissal. Missouri law currently requires workers to prove that discrimination was a "contributing" factor, a standard established in a 2007 court ruling. More

Do public employees get a better deal? It depends
The Associated Press via Google News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A prosecutor in California collects $118,000 in unused sick days. A police officer in New York rings up $125,000 in overtime the year before retiring and "spikes" his pension payments. An Ohio school superintendent is hired for the same job from which he just retired and takes in more than $100,000 annually in salary and pension. The headlines feed a stereotype of fat-cat public workers with the kind of cushy benefits that most private-sector workers can only dream about. More

Weigh criminal records carefully when hiring
MCT News Service via Lansing State Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The National Employment Law Project recently urged employers to reconsider hiring policies that excluded any candidates with criminal records. In a report titled "65 Million Need Not Apply," the organization documented widespread use of criminal background checking to eliminate job candidates, as well as the existence of job ads that say no one with felony or misdemeanor convictions would be considered.
