Tennessee lawmakers approved a bill that lets businesses require their workers to speak English on the job, despite complaints from opponents that late changes to the measure will open businesses and the state to litigation. The Senate unanimously approved a compromise measure that says businesses can require workers to speak English whenever there is a "legitimate business necessity," such as safety or efficiency. The measure is meant to protect businesses from litigation and comply with guidelines set by the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, said its sponsor, Sen. Jack Johnson, R-Franklin. Grant to give a boost to a California State University nursing programs

Nursing programs at California State University, San Bernardino's Palm Desert campus have received a big boost, with a $192,000 state grant that will beef up the school's bachelor of nursing curriculum. The grant will be used to pay instructors and counselors for the bachelor of science in nursing program. It comes from California's Song-Brown Program, which is aimed at expanding the number and diversity of nurses in the state. More

For much of her career, Edmonton engineer Gail Powley has been the only woman in the room — but she's taken it in stride. One job led her to a control room at a Texas plant, where she had to lead a team of 10 very apprehensive male employees.
