During this interactive session, attendees will write their HR vows as they learn about the similarities and differences between affirmative action and diversity, the legal risks associated with the "marriage" between the two, or "divorce" as the case may be, and some practical tips on how to create a lawful diversity program that values differences and encourages employee interaction. Obama says Health Care Overhaul Should be 'Uniquely American'
from Bloomberg via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram
President Barack Obama said his proposed overhaul of the U.S. healthcare system should draw the best from government programs and the private sector, and he defended his effort to hold down costs. "We need to come up with something that is uniquely American," Obama said. "If we are smart, we should be able to design a system in which people still have choices" and in which "necessary treatment is provided, but we don’t have a huge amount of waste in the system." More
Diversity 101: What Not to Say to White Colleagues
Race and ethnicity are much in the news these days, propelled by the nation's first African-American president, first Latina nominee to the Supreme Court and increasingly diverse schools and workplaces. But although diversity is becoming more apparent common does not mean it's easy to embrace. Luke Visconti, of DiversityInc magazine, discusses cultural sensitivities, offering tips on what not to say to white colleagues. More

40 Best Companies for Diversity
from Black Enterprise magazine
For African-Americans, the jobless rate has reached a staggering 15 percent, the worst such measure in more than 20 years. But even as corporations continue to lay off scores of workers, we’ve learned a couple of seemingly incongruent facts—worker productivity is up and companies are hiring. Although hires fell to their lowest rates in eight years nationwide, there are close to 3 million jobs available in the U.S. And approximately 40,000 of those positions are available among the companies that made Black Enterprise's list of the "40 Best Companies for Diversity" this year. Are Gen Y Workers Good for Business?
A new generation of young Americans entering the workforce – Generation Y– isn't the best choice if you want loyal, hard-working, long-hour employees on your team, according to the author of "The Future Arrived Yesterday: The Rise of the Protean Corporation and What It Means for You." Business and technology journalist Michael S. Malone writes in part: " "Managing this generation may not only be a nightmare, it may actually be impossible. It is quite likely that some sizable percentage of these new workers will never work in a steady job on the payroll of a single employer." More
