Supreme Court upholds Obama health care mandate
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A narrowly divided Supreme Court upheld President Barack Obama's health care law in a complex opinion that gives the president a major election-year victory. The historic 5-4 decision will affect the way Americans receive and pay for their personal medical care in the future. It upholds the individual mandate that most Americans get health insurance or pay a penalty — and it was the penalty, or tax, that ultimately saved the law. More

Gender pay divide persists
The San Francisco Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Pay discrimination is a silent offense. Women know when they're being harassed and abused, of course, and they can often tell if they're being discriminated against in hiring and promotion — all they have to do is count the men with lesser skills and credentials doing jobs they still aspire to. But in many workplaces, discussing pay is frowned upon; in some, it's a dismissible offense. More

AARP Survey: Fighting age discrimination
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Ageism. Say the word out loud. When I do, it forms awkwardly in my throat, clinging to the back of my palate. Then, it pushes out with a distinct hissing, like a viperous snake. Go ahead, try saying it. Age discrimination is insidious. More

How impatience undermines cross-cultural goals
Management-Issues    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
"Impatience" and "cross-cultural" don't work well together. Cross-cultural relationships and projects inevitably take more time, more effort and more patience. Slowing down often goes against the grain of what we're trying to accomplish. More

Redefining diversity for the new global workforce
Fast Company    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Our views of diversity in America are changing, but they aren't keeping up with the global reality that now faces American companies. Traditionally, diversity focused on the integration of people from racial, gender, physical ability and religious perspectives inside of large corporations motivated by political or operational imperative, or social good. The idea was to create a diverse workforce that reflected the composition of the American population in a way that could be seen, one that reflected the diversity of their customers. More

Creating an inclusive workplace
InsuranceNewsNet.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Anecdotal evidence suggests that many companies would like to employ people with disabilities, yet many doubt their ability to keep these individuals safe on the job. When Walgreens began to plan a new distribution center in 2002, the company focused on an integrated work environment in which employees with and without disabilities would work side by side, doing the same jobs for the same pay, being held to the same standards. Now in its fifth year of operation, the facility's operational data sheds light on the results of their initiative. More

Asians in the American workplace: Breaking through the 'bamboo ceiling'
Tech Wire Asia    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The so-called "Bamboo Ceiling" effect is a term that was introduced by leadership strategist and executive coach Jane Hyun in her book, Breaking the Bamboo Ceiling: Career Strategies for Asians, as a combination of individual, cultural, and organizational factors that impede Asian Americans' career paths inside the organizations. The research was based on hundreds of interviews with Fortune 500 executives, as well as Hyun's own insights from her corporate consulting practice. More

If we work into our 70s, what happens in the workplace?
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
You might think working well into your eighth decade is preposterous. But it is becoming relatively commonplace. The number of working people age 65 and older reached an all-time low in 2001, when just 13 percent held jobs. Now that rate is rebounding, and the number of workers older than 65 is 18 percent of the workforce. More
