How to Tackle Equality and Diversity in the Health Service
from Health Service Journal
Equality and diversity is important within healthcare for two basic reasons. One is about providing better services for patients and the second is about making the NHS a better place to work. “While we concentrate on the workforce issue, what is increasingly important is the link between the issues around equality and diversity in service provision and as an employer, that you can’t neatly separate them entirely into separate boxes,” says Alastair Henderson, deputy director of NHS Employers. Supreme Court Ruling Offers Little Guidance on Hiring
from The New York Times
In ruling for a group of white firefighters in New Haven this week, the Supreme Court tried to address a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don’t quandary for many cities and other employers: what they should do when an employment test yields results that overwhelmingly favor whites. But many legal experts said that instead of setting forth clear new rules, the court’s decision left things as muddled as ever for the nation’s employers — and seemed to ensure much more litigation over the explosive issue of employment discrimination. Courts Face New Faith-Healing Challenges
from TIME Magazine
Though most states have child abuse laws allowing religious exemptions for parents who shun medicine for their sick children, recent cases have raised the thorny legal issues for parents following less-recognized faiths. Historically, many of the parents addressed by the laws have embraced faiths like Pentecostalism and Christian Science, while others are Jehovah's Witnesses — all established denominations that the law has gradually taken into account. Limiting Age-Bias Suits
from Human Resource Executive Magazine
Employment lawyers were surprised by the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision that makes it harder for employees to prove age bias, and wondered whether it would prompt Congress to attempt to reverse the ruling. In a 5-4 vote in Gross vs. FBL Financial Services, the justices ruled that employees must show age discrimination was the direct cause of an adverse employment decision, and was not just one of the factors playing a role in that decision. HR Shaped American Race Relations, says Diversity Guru
from People Management Magazine Online
HR played a pivotal role in helping America move from a country that “defined racial segregation” to one that has embraced its first African-American president, delegates at the SHRM conference heard. Earl G Graves Senior, an entrepreneur and diversity champion, said the emergence of African-American people in major company leadership roles was thanks to a generation of visionary HR professionals. People Management Magazine Online
from The Boston Globe
Barriers to good care at hospitals are just one of many reasons that people with disabilities suffer health disparities as sharp as those facing racial and ethnic minorities. Still, hospitals are a good place to start in making care truly accessible for those with disabilities. On Friday, two Partners Healthcare hospitals agreed to spend millions on new equipment and other capital improvements to make sure that persons with disabilities can get examinations and treatments of equal quality with other patients. Doctors Rebel at Government Prayer Limits
from WorldNetDaily
A government crackdown on doctors and nurses who offer to pray with patients is drawing a response from physicians at a meeting this week of the British Medical Association. "I think it is getting to the point where many of us feel we cannot talk to patients about their spiritual or religious needs or ask them about praying," Dr. Bernadette Birtwhistle, a cancer specialist said. "Christianity is being seen as something that is unhelpful," she said. "… Freedom of speech is being curtailed too much, and I don't think that is always in the benefit of patients." More
