A diverse workforce is integral to a strong economy
Center for American Progress    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Our nation and our workforce are both becoming more diverse. The share of people of color in the United States is increasing; more women are entering the labor force; and gay* and transgender individuals are making vital contributions to our economy, while being increasingly open about who they are. To that end, businesses that embrace diversity have a more solid footing in the marketplace than others. More

Over 50 and job hunting? Here's some encouraging news
CNN    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
We're all familiar with the stereotype: Job seekers in their 50s almost always get shunted aside in favor of young (and believed to be more tech-savvy) go-getters in their 20s and 30s, right? Well, as it turns out, not so much. When Chicago outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas set out to analyze government employment data by age group, going back to January 2010, researchers made an interesting discovery. Of the 4,319,000 jobs created in the U.S. over the past two and a half years, about 70 percent went to people age 55 or older. More

A little diversity training goes a long way
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Gender inequality in the workplace isn't necessarily men's fault, but that doesn't mean men can't help fix it. A new study of nearly 100 employees at Rockwell Automation Inc., more than 60 percent of them white males, found that just a few days of training on diversity and inclusion can dramatically change how men view their role in improving their organization on those fronts. Rockwell is a maker of factory-automation equipment. More

Human Resource Executive Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Witnessing a bullying incident at work can be just as negative an experience as being bullied yourself, according to new research. HR managers should encourage an environment where people feel safe to discuss any bullying they've witnessed, experts say. More

Denied health care insurance: Wife files lawsuit
DiversityInc.    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Transgender wife cannot be denied health insurance. Mrs. Radtke (no first same given) was born male in Wisconsin; she later moved to Minnesota and had gender-reassignment surgery. She obtained a Minnesota court order changing her name and gender and a Wisconsin order to change her birth certificate to female. She then married Mr. Radtke, who applied for health insurance for her under his union's health plan. The plan denied coverage. More

Would you hire a smoker?
The Globe and Mail    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Ron Guest has interviewed more than 6,000 job candidates in his 25 years as a human resources specialist, and in all that time, he's never had an employer explicitly request a nonsmoker for the job. "No one has asked for it," he says, "but if I had two candidates who were exactly even and one was a smoker and one wasn't, I would bet the employer would favor the non-smoker if they knew."
