The game is changing in health care – with the traditional model we’ve known for decades now driven by consumer experience and external factors that require a new way of doing business. Responding to a new consumer model in health care, relationship-centered care stimulates a patient-provider partnership that understands the external climate, transforms the internal culture, and delivers purpose-orientation in the workplace.
Learning Objectives:
- Evaluate the internal and external factors leading to staff turnover and learn how to help managers spot early warning signs of future turnover
- Understand the differences between engagement and loyalty
- Consider strategies to attract and retain clinical staff across care settings (e.g., hospital, long-term care, home health)

Have You Taken the Pledge?
The Institute for Diversity in Health Management continues to lead efforts on the #123forEquity Pledge to Act Campaign. Since July 2015, over 1,200 hospitals have signed on. In addition, 46 state and 9 metropolitan hospital associations have pledged support for the campaign, and more than 30 public and private organizations nationwide have endorsed it. Has your organization taken the pledge?
To help support your efforts, we have developed a new #123forEquity Toolkit. It contains a checklist of resources to help you achieve the campaign goals including case studies and best practices, frequently asked questions, a customizable slide presentation you can customize and use with your board of trustees and community and suggested social media content.
We will continue to work with hospitals and health systems that have signed the pledge to track progress and share experiences so we can learn from each other. If your hospital has not signed the #123forEquity pledge, please visit our campaign website and sign on today.

Modern Healthcare
Of the estimated 3 million nurses currently active in the U.S., just less than 25 percent are racial or ethnic minorities, despite those groups making up 38 percent of the general population. The gap is even wider among advanced practice registered nurses. About 13 percent of APRNs are from an ethnic or racial minority, according to a 2016 report from the National Academy of Medicine. The nation's changing demographics — population experts predict the U.S. will become a majority “minority” nation by 2050 — is putting greater pressure on hospital systems and physician practices to hire a more diverse nursing workforce.

Efforts to support a more diverse and inclusive society require organizational commitment. Organizations should examine their leadership portfolios and take steps similar to those adopted by AONE to ensure inclusive leadership at the board level. If we are to be successful in creating an equitable society, then we must engage and provide opportunities for diverse individuals to participate as leaders in the quest for a just health care system.

Most diversity training initiatives fail because they come across as a none-too-thoughtful exercise in political correctness rather than the valuable business education programs they should be. This subject was on my mind after reading an excellent comprehensive section in the July-August Harvard Business Review, “Spotlight on Building a Diverse Organization.” There’s a great deal here (I’d say the section should be required reading for all HR execs), but the insight that most resonated with me was the persistent failure of organizations’ attempts to “legislate” more positive attitudes toward diversity.

It's widely known that U.S. women generally earn less money in the workplace than their male counterparts. This can vary by industry and geographic location, of course, but women are paid an average of 79 cents for every dollar earned by men. Although progress has been made to change this over the years, it has been slow. If it continues at the current rate, it will take 43 years — until 2059 — to close the pay gap, according to research. But it doesn't have to be this way.

Hiring people to fit company culture is one of those things that sounds great in theory when you want to work in a place where everybody gets along and wants the same things. But there is increasing concern that cultural fit is also used as a lazy excuse for old-fashioned bias in recruitment. Jobseekers may find themselves judged too introverted, too right-wing, too working class, too money-focused, too unattractive, too female or too foreign to fit in.

The task for recruiters during college recruitment is multifaceted: Finding top talent in a deluge of young applicants while discovering diverse perspectives that can add to and challenge the culture of an organization. But how do you present culture, as well as search for those aligned to it, without hiring a homogeneous crop of hopefuls?

Every day, our nation is becoming more diverse — in classrooms, workplaces, neighborhoods and communities. The health of all racial and ethnic groups is key to our public health. Unfortunately, racial and socioeconomic disparities still exist. For example, the life expectancy between black and white Americans varies significantly. On average, black Americans die 3.8 years before white Americans due to higher rates of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and perinatal conditions.
