Medical students may act on unconscious racial preferences
News-Medical.Net    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
New Johns Hopkins research shows that medical students — just like the general American population — may have unconscious if not overt preferences for white people, but this innate bias does not appear to translate into different or lesser health care of other races. More

Get ready to hire generation Z
American Express Company 's Open Forum    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Just as companies have adjusted to the demands of generation Y, a new generation is set to graduate from college: generation Z. William Strauss and Neil Howe set the standard for generational analysis in their book: "Generations: The History of America's Future 1584 to 2069." The basic premise of the book is that generational traits are cyclical, and therefore predictable. Based on that analysis, here are five ideas for how to prepare your recruiting strategy for generation Z. More

screen applicants

Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Lisa Quast writes that she is often asked what her thoughts are about using pre-employment testing. While she says pre-employment tests can be beneficial in helping to screen and select the best candidates for jobs, there are legal issues that can arise if the tests are not valid, reliable, or are improperly implemented. Making sense of diversity management
Diversity Inc.    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The old adage that "knowledge is power" is certainly true, but if that knowledge isn't available in a comprehensible form, it doesn't deliver its promise. Diversity-management knowledge has been accumulating in our publication and at progressive companies for more than a decade now. But like most subjects in development, its progress is scattershot, with surges in some areas as they become relevant (employee-resource groups, cross-cultural mentoring) and gaps as well. More

Houston Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It may not be fair, but it's not illegal. It's reality, according to a new book by a University of Texas economics professor who contends that good-looking folks earn higher wages, get better jobs and have more success in the workplace. More

Racial bias seen in study of lead dust and children
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A class-action lawsuit was filed against a prominent Baltimore medical institute, accusing it of knowingly exposing black children as young as a year old to lead poisoning in the 1990s as part of a study exploring the hazards of lead paint. Lawyers for the plaintiffs say that more than 100 children were endangered by high levels of lead dust in their homes despite assurances from the Kennedy Krieger Institute that the houses were "lead safe." WAMU 88.5    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The District of Columbia has launched the first program in the country to help transgendered women and men overcome workplace discrimination. It's been a violent year for transgendered women in D.C. with one murder and multiple assaults. It's no surprise for Latisa Mormon, who 's been a sex worker in the District. "I've been brutally beat on my head with seven baseball bats, left me unconscious," she says. "I've been stabbed in my face as you can see. I've been a victim of a gunshot." More

Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Women communicate differently than men and that's a good thing. Cursing by a male is generally accepted in the workplace while the same words, spoken by a female, are considered offensive. Using foul language to prove that you are as tough as any male is a losing strategy. Here's why. More
