HHS finalizes standards on health disparities
The Hill    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Health and Human Services Department finalized new standards to track broad factors that affect people's health. The standards are part of HHS's effort to reduce healthcare disparities — differences in health status and access to healthcare that stem from social, cultural and environmental issues. More

Study: Half of young professionals value Facebook access, smartphone options over salary
Fast Company    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For a whole new generation of tech-savvy young professionals, having access to social media or the right smartphone in the workplace is at times more important than earning a higher salary. For businesses, that means adapting to this change in priorities rather than resisting it — if the Mad Men-era job force expected noon whiskeys and female secretaries, then our modern-day equivalent demands Facebook and iPhones. Women without a mentor
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Everyone should have mentors. It only helps you in your career — and life — if you have someone who can share their own experiences, learnings and battle scars with you. You won't avoid mistakes, but the idea here is that you may be able to avoid making the mistakes they made. More

Disliked and disadvantaged?
Human Resource Executive Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
"Unlikeable" patients received less sympathetic treatment and attention from their healthcare providers who estimated lower pain intensity and were less sympathetic to the patients' pain, according to a study in the October 2011 issue of Pain magazine. Could the same phenomenon be at work in the world of business? Are less-likeable employees more likely to be overlooked or discounted as HR professionals, supervisors and managers address employees' concerns and issues, select employees for promotions — or not — and administer pay increases and other perks? Legal update: 'Equal opportunity bullies,' forced family leave
DiversityInc    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Injury was not because of race. A white employee was hit by a half-ton steel coil, which fell from a machine operated by a Black employee. In addition to a worker's-compensation claim, the injured worker sued under 42 U.S. Code §1981 for a racially hostile environment. He claimed the black coworker had been aggressive toward him in the past, and the injury was a deliberate act motivated by racial animosity. The court dismissed the case. A thorough investigation and all evidence showed the coil incident was a pure accident. There was evidence that the machine operator was intimidating but was an "equal opportunity bully." More

Small businesses support LGBT workplace fairness
The Hill    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Gay and transgender employees sorely need legal protections to combat the high rates of employment discrimination they experience in the workplace. Such discrimination leads to greater unemployment insecurity for gay and transgender people, and it heaps unnecessary costs on business by pushing away otherwise qualified employees from employment simply because they are gay or transgender. If passed, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act would ensure nobody is forced out of job simply based on his or her sexual orientation or gender identity. More

More businesses turning to workplace chaplains
The Virginian-Pilot    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A small but growing number of companies are employing workplace chaplains to bring religion to their workers but to provide comfort during crises and sometimes to assume off-site pastoral duties for those unaffiliated with a religion. More

AARP: Older workers say economy worse than last year
The Huffington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Older workers are gloomier about the economy now than they were last year. Nearly two-thirds of workers older than 50 first surveyed by AARP's Public Policy Institute in 2010 said things had gotten worse by the time the senior lobbying powerhouse followed up in August. Fewer than one in 10 said their view of the economy had improved. The rest said things had stayed the same. More
